COPENHAGEN, Denmark, August 21, 2017 – The UNLEASH Lab awarded Fidan Karimova, co-founder of Global Water Girls, LLC (GWG), and Ulrik Sludekilde Rasmussen, Jose Fernando Perusquia, Davi Victral, and Charles Lavoie-Aubuchon, the Most Visionary Team at UNLEASH’s inaugural awards ceremony for their pitch on the GWG Ocean Plastics to Energy project.
The award was presented by Ashton Kutcher, actor and co-creator of A-Grade Investments, which invests in top tech companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Warby Parker. Other presenters included the Princess Mary of Denmark, Salman Khan (Founder of Khan Academy), Ron Burkle (Investor and Philanthropist), Guy Oseary (Talent Manager and Investor), and more. The UNLEASH awards were presented to the best solutions that addressed the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of 2030. The annual international conference brought together talented professionals from all over the world to create real solutions to address major global issues.
The winners of the Most Visionary Team pitched a clear and innovative solution to address plastic pollution in the oceans and generate energy from them at coastal wastewater treatment plants. The team worked with each other and others from around the world to further develop the original project spearheaded by GWG and help it effectively meet multiple SDGs. The project creates a cradle-to-cradle option for utilities to generate their own power by the reuse of plastic waste. GWG will continue to develop and pursue this project. The company is currently seeking funding for a pilot in Honolulu, Hawaii.
GWG is a company founded by Fidan with three other women, Anjali Gupta, Katy Lackey, and Grace Richardson, who work together to find creative answers to challenges surrounding the topic of water. Fidan advocated the project to the UNLEASH Lab Conference, where she, Ulrik, Jose, Davi, and Charles were able to build upon the idea and pitch it to over 100 investors.
