WASHINGTON, D.C., April 2018 – The international magazine World Water featured Global Water Girls (GWG) as the cover story of its March/April issue. The article “From trash to treasure: Ocean plastic waste source of alternative energy," written by Katy Lackey, GWG's Director of Research, highlights the company’s Ocean Plastics to Energy Project.

“More than 90 percent of plastics produced are derived from virgin fossil feedstocks [and] only about 9 percent of plastic waste has been recycled,” Lackey writes, “Efforts to redesign plastic production and consumption patterns are underway. And while they’re a crucial element in the push toward a circular economy, the massive existing amount of plastic waste must still be addressed.” The article traces the economic viability, effective end use, energy value, and the process of using plastic waste in synthetic gas production at water resource recovery plants. Lackey further outlines the project’s advantages, challenges, and near term pilot plan in Honolulu, HI.

GWG continues to gain traction as the company presses for a seed investment for its first pilot to convert ocean plastic into renewable gas for use at coastal wastewater treatment plant. The team presented at WEFTEC’s Innovation Pavilion in Chicago last October and more recently at the Pacific Water Conference in Hawaii. The all-female team has received an outpour of interest and support for the project. The team has refined technical aspects of the pilot and is working with local partners in Hawaii and a technology provider to set up the pilot.
“It’s an exciting time,” remarks Anjali Rani Gupta, Senior Engineer at GWG, “We’re close to getting this off the ground. The potential is huge. This will change the way treatment plants manage energy and how communities manage waste.”

World Water has 26 years in publication, with an international circulation renowned for advanced technologies and pressing water topics around the globe. The March/April issue featuring the GWG cover story has a bonus distribution at IFAT in Germany (May 2018), OZWATER in Australia (May 2018), and ACE in Las Vegas (June 2018).
